Cutting down on traffic fatalities in the United States

| Feb 27, 2018 | Car Accidents |

Statistics show that roads throughout Ohio and the rest of American aren’t as safe as they once were. However, a new report called by the National Governors Association aims to change this. It offers state governments a series of guidelines that they can use in part or in whole to make roadways safer. The report specifically mentions the roles that governors can play in achieving this goal.

For instance, NGA says governors can help agencies within their states more effectively collaborate with each other. The ultimate goal is to completely eliminate traffic fatalities at some point in the future. In 2016, there were 37,461 traffic fatalities. This was a 5.6 percent increase from the previous year. Furthermore, 39 states saw an increase in traffic deaths for 2016.

These increases come after years of declining fatality rates on American roadways. In fact, the United States now lags behind many other developed nations in terms of road safety. If a driver was acting in a negligent manner when causing a collision, he or she may be liable for damages incurred by a victim or victims.

Injured victims can incur medical bills, missed wages and lost future earnings. They could also have to contend with repair costs or property damage. If an individual is killed in a crash, the victim’s family may pursue damages. An attorney may be able to use police reports or other evidence to show negligence caused a crash to occur. This information could make it easier to pursue just compensation in a personal injury case.
