Nursing home neglect is inexcusable, take action to stop it

In our last post, we discussed how granny cams are helping to keep nursing home residents safe. That post brings up the important point that anyone who has a loved one in a nursing home must be aware of signs of neglect, especially when there isn't a camera watching over his or her loved one.

Sadly, not everyone cares for the elderly in the manner they should. Caregivers, paid attendants and employees of nursing homes are some of the people who don't properly care for the elderly.

In some cases, it is possible that the people who neglect the elderly aren't properly trained or lack the skills needed to care for the resident. Those don't excuse the neglect.

The signs of neglect vary greatly depending on the circumstances. Bedsores, soiled clothing, rashes, malnutrition, dehydration, an unkempt appearance, infections and lack of necessary care items are all signs of neglect. Unclean living quarters are also a sign of nursing home neglect.

Even seemingly harmless issues like missing eyeglasses or dry skin might signal nursing home neglect. In the most simple terms, if you think that your loved one is being neglected, you should investigate the situation so that you can take the steps necessary to protect your loved one.

If you find out that your loved one is being neglected, you have the right to take action. You can also explore your options to seek compensation for the harm your loved one suffered. There is never an excuse for nursing home neglect, so stand up and help to keep your loved one protected by putting a stop to the neglect.
